Three leagues, three different clocks
Basketball has no single format, and the differences matter if you are working out when you get your evening back. The professional men’s game is four quarters of twelve — forty-eight minutes, played over roughly two and a quarter hours. The women’s professional game is four quarters of ten and finishes closer to two hours. The men’s college game drops quarters entirely for two twenty-minute halves.
Each card is labelled with its league and uses that league’s own arithmetic, so a college half and a professional quarter are never treated as the same unit. The clock and period shown come straight from the scoreboard; the estimate underneath is ours.
The endgame problem
No sport stretches its final minute further, and the reason is strategic rather than incidental. A team trailing by more than one possession in the last minute fouls on purpose, every time down the floor. Each foul stops the clock, sends someone to the line for two, and hands the ball back — so a minute becomes a dozen separate stoppages, each with its own dead time.
On top sit the timeouts teams save specifically for the endgame, the reviews for out-of-bounds and shot-clock calls, and the commercial breaks riding along with all of it. The last minute of a close game can take ten to twelve real minutes; the last minute of a twenty-point game takes about sixty seconds, because nobody bothers.
The estimate assumes an average across those cases rather than guessing which one it is looking at, which is why it is rounded and hedged. A blowout beats it; a two-possession game with fouls to give does not.
Where the rest of the time goes
Outside the endgame the clock is comparatively honest — it runs during play and stops only on whistles — but the surrounding structure still roughly doubles the game. The interval between halves is a fixed fifteen minutes at every level, the breaks between quarters each carry a commercial load, and mandatory media timeouts sit on top of that.
A game between periods says so on its card rather than showing a stopped clock, and the estimate covers the part of the interval still ahead. Team-by-team countdowns live on the basketball hub, with the NBA, WNBA and college pages listing every club.
Overtime and what we will not guess at
Basketball overtime is a timed five-minute period, so unlike some sports the clock keeps meaning something and the estimate keeps working — with the caveat that overtime repeats until somebody leads at the end of one, and nothing predicts how many there will be. The card estimates the period being played and no further.
