Choosing a duration
The short end of this list closes activities rather than running them: one and two minutes are for transitions, warnings and partner talk. Three to five minutes is where a small activity fits — a quickwrite, a presentation, bell work, a break. Ten and fifteen minutes are station and small-group lengths. Twenty minutes and up are work blocks, and forty-five and sixty are whole periods rather than tasks.
Each page explains what its length is used for, so if you are between two durations, open both and read the first paragraph. The difference between a ten-minute and a fifteen-minute block is usually a difference in what you are asking students to produce.
When to build a custom timer instead
These ten pages cover the common lengths and nothing else. If you need a duration that is not here — twenty-five minutes for a standard Pomodoro interval, say — or you want your own label on screen, a different theme, or a countdown that ends at a specific time rather than after a set number of minutes, build it on the classroom timer page instead.
